Experimental Volumetric Smoke
Adds volumetric smoke and dust to tires and much more.
mod_description
Volumetric Smoke (BETA, EXPERIMENTAL)
Physics-driven 3D vehicle smoke for BeamNG.drive
Volumetric Smoke replaces BeamNG's flat asphalt tire-smoke sprites with depth-aware, ray-marched density volumes.
Smoke is generated from real vehicle telemetry instead of a simple on/off effect. Cold tires produce a light haze, while sustained hot drifting and burnouts create dense, rolling white clouds.
Features
Tire smoke responds to wheel slip, load, speed, tire temperature, contact-patch heat and drift angle.
Smoke expands, rises, mixes, curls and gradually dissolves into the atmosphere.
Vehicles physically interact with the smoke, pushing it around their body and opening passages when driving through a cloud.
Optional engine exhaust includes restrained diesel soot, cold condensation, head-gasket steam and oil smoke from engine damage.
Optional radiator/coolant vapor and genuinely overheated brake smoke.
Independent enable/disable controls for tire, exhaust, coolant and brake effects.
Adjustable 32-256 GPU volume capacity.
Adjustable global smoke opacity.
Depth-aware rendering allows the camera and vehicles to enter the smoke without exposing flat particle sprites.
Settings
Open the UI Apps editor and add the Volumetric Tire Smoke Settings app.
The default 64-volume capacity is recommended for normal gameplay. Higher settings can produce larger and longer lasting smoke clouds but may add GPU latency, especially at 192 or 256 volumes.
Installation
Install through the BeamNG Repository, or place the downloaded ZIP directly in your BeamNG mods folder. No original game files are replaced.
Compatibility and limitations
The visual simulation is client-side and is not synchronized in multiplayer (yet).
Exhaust, coolant and brake effects intentionally remain restrained during normal vehicle operation.
This is an experimental graphics mod. Performance depends heavily on GPU volume capacity.
If the effect does not appear after installation, restart the game or reload Lua (CTRL + L) and verify that the mod is enabled.
Smoke not appearing? Lower the GPU slider.
Low FPS? Run these commands to change smoke graphics settings:
Code:
vtsTireSmoke.setQuality("performance")
vtsTireSmoke.setQuality("balanced")
vtsTireSmoke.setQuality("cinematic")
